As this rape occurred at a time when the US and Japan are negotiating placement of a larger airfield on the island it has created a great deal of tension between the two countries with Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda saying it is inexcusable. As the US rushes to address the growing political problem created by such crimes I can personally only feel empathy for the islanders and all they have had to put up with since WWII. Not only were they ordered to commit mass suicides by the Japanese military when the island was overrun, but just last year the government attempted to have this stricken from Japanese history books. Along with such blatant disregard for their past suffering they have had to deal with a repeatedly uncontrollable US military presence with no end in site. Such flagrant abuses of power by the United States sickens me as they attempt to force their military presence on a supposed 'ally' simply amazes me.

This is truly sad that such an unfortunate event would get in the way of Japan and the US working together. Hopefully everything will work out for the best. PS Congrats on your one year anniversary of fleeing the US. Here's to another year! Just kidding mom.....
And yet, US soldiers are still exempt from the new fingerprinting rules.
I agree with matt...i also think it's sad that in our own military we have these kind of problems. I hope the come down hard on the soldier if they ever find him. I also think that it's a sad statement on mankind that there are those kind of people out there. Also why are US soldiers exempt from new fingerprinting rules? and what are those rules?
dude i'm definitely the best poster on your blog. let me know when you can chat and I'll make the time for ya! I miss you chris!
Chris, Grandma remembers Dec 7, 1941, as a terrible day, and she was just 17. The US had worked hard to stay uninvolved in the war, but Japan had other ideas. I'm appalled by the inexcusable actions taken by the soldier, but do not condemn the entire US military and our country for his actions. I have soldiers on planes every day, who are working for you to insure our freedom...don't forget that you are an American first, dear.. Love, Aunt Mary
Have you ever read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee"? Good reading and excellent insight into our country's history and manifest destiny - which IMHO seems to have continued unchecked despite dire consequences to native peoples everywhere.
